Identifying, nurturing, and developing gifted youth is the primary goal of NUST MISIS’s career guidance initiatives. Our comprehensive program covers all regions of Russia, as well as near and far abroad countries. Every year, about 400,000 people participate in the university’s projects and events, including the traditional Open House.”

The Open House resembled a science festival: prospective students tried on the roles of engineers, scientists, and tech entrepreneurs. At the College of Mining, guests learned how to operate mining machinery and industrial equipment. The College of New Materials demonstrated unique microscopes used to analyze the structure of alloys and other substances, while scientists explained how perovskite solar panels and shape-memory materials are created. The College of Biomedical Engineering showcased cutting-edge developments — biomaterials and medical devices — already transforming modern medicine. The College of Economics & Management presented case studies on AI-driven business process optimization. For humanities students, experts from the College of Basic Professional Studies delivered engaging lectures on neural text analysis, intercultural communication, and practical applications.

“I’ve long been fascinated by biotechnology. When I found out the university was launching a new program in this field, I immediately decided to apply here. Winning the MISIS Lights the Stars Olympiad gives me extra points, so I’m confident I’ll secure a state-funded spot,” said an applicant Daniil.

Many attendees came with their parents, who wanted to ensure that classes would be held in modern lecture halls and labs, and that study and leisure spaces were well-equipped. Frequently asked questions concerned scholarship programs (MISIS offers over 50), differences between dormitories near Belyaevo, Kaluzhskaya, Leninsky Prospekt, and Studencheskaya metro stations, and opportunities in the “New Level” soft skills development program.

“My son and I spent a long time searching for a university where he could fulfill his dream of creating innovative technologies. We knew MISIS had topped materials science rankings for years, so we waited for Open House to see the labs ourselves. Here, we saw next-gen solar panels and bioprinters already used in leading medical centers. After the tours, we were certain this is the right place for him,” said the father of an applicant Maxim.

He spoke so passionately about quantum tech that I got hooked! Today, seeing the superconducting quantum tech lab — it felt like a spaceship! Now my goal is clear: I’m applying here. I took part in the Joint Interuniversity Physics Olympiad in late March and am waiting for results. I want to work with the same equipment Alexey talked about and push science forward.”

The Open House also attracted undergraduate students exploring master’s programs. Sofia, graduating this year from the “Technological Machines and Equipment” program, noted: “I plan to compete in the Academician A. A. Bochvar Project Competition — winning 100 points for MISIS’s master’s admissions. I’ve chosen the ‘Innovation Engineering’ program at the College of Technologies because my diploma project is a complex device prototype, and the faculty will help refine it.”

After attending the lecture “AI in Modern Business”, undergraduate student Olga said: “I visited several lectures by my favorite College of Economics & Management, but this one stood out!

The event also drew international visitors. Daniiar from Kazakhstan, a participant in the “I Want to Study at MISIS!” Olympiad for foreign applicants, noted that one reason he chose MISIS was its 40+ student clubs for talent development.

NUST MISIS took the first place in Russia in the field of Materials Technology, and is also among the best universities in the country in the subject rankings in physics, mathematics, mechanical engineering and robotics, oil and gas, geology, IT and management. In the overall ranking the university took 16th place, like the year before.

In 2022, RAEX ranked the best universities in 29 subject areas for the first time. NUST MISIS is represented in 8 areas. The university has shown the best results in the “Technologies of materials” rating, taking the 1st place in the country. Also, the university entered the top 5 in “Geology”, “Oil and Gas Industry”, “Mechanical Engineering and Robotics”.

When compiling the subject rankings, the statistical data of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, the providers of bibliometric data Clarivate Analytics and Scopus, the organizers of student competitions “I am a professional”, the monitoring and analysis system of the media and social media SCAN-Interfax, aggregators of online courses, Alexa web analytics platform, as well as social networks were analyzed.

In the overall ranking of NUST MISIS retained its last year’s position — 16th place in Russia and entered the top 10 in the field of “Best universities in terms of research activity”. By two other key indicators of a rating — “Demand of graduates” and “Education” — the university took the 12th and 21st places respectively.

As a Rector of NUST MISIS Alevtina Chernikova noted, today, the key factors for the university’s success are a strong teaching staff, conditions for doing research and communication with the academic and business communities. Nowadays, due to the established trends of personification and interest in technical education, it is necessary to develop Russian academic mobility and network forms of education. Communication between universities will benefit the entire education system, because in each team there are scientists and teachers who create new educational programs and even scientific schools, and most importantly — help to form the student’s personality.

According to the compilers of the rating, in recent years Russian universities have made the most progress in the field of scientific publications indexed in foreign scientometric databases. Over the five past years, the number of publications per scientific and pedagogical worker on average for the top 100 universities of Russia has increased more than threefold, the number of citations per employee — almost sevenfold. At the same time, increased attention to scientometric indicators in today’s conditions becomes excessive.

Enroll in a NUST MISIS Master’s Program Without Exams

NUST MISIS has started classes at the pre-university program to prepare international students for further admission to the university. More than forty students from 26 countries of the world will study the Russian language and subjects necessary for admission to engineering and technical specialties.

The NUST MISIS pre-university program has been operating since 2015. For six years, more than 700 students have studied here, and as a result, 80% of them have become university students. Education at the pre-university program is an opportunity for international students to master the Russian language and the terminology of the main subjects studied at technical universities: mathematics, physics, chemistry or computer science.

Most of the students this year are from Vietnam, Iran and Ecuador. In addition to classes, cultural, sports and adaptation events are held for students. International students learn about legal norms of behavior in Russia, security measures, rules for living on campus, actions in emergencies (ambulance telephones, police, embassies, etc.), health issues, as well as consultations on visa issues, etc.

The program is designed for one academic year, at the end of which students receive a certificate of completion of the pre-university program. All graduates take the Unified State Exam or entrance examinations and are enrolled in NUST MISIS on a general basis under the university admission rules. Most often, graduates of the preparatory department enter the College of Environmentally Sound Technologies & Engineering, the College of Mining, the College of New Materials and Nanotechnologies and the College of Information Technologies and Computer Sciences.

Students of the program can be school graduates, bachelors or masters who wish to continue their studies in Russia. You can enter the pre-university program both on a referral of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia, by applying to the Russia.Study portal (studying on a quota is free), or by paying for the course (the cost is 170,000 rubles).
On October 31st, 2018, questions related to both the educational process and extracurricular activities were discussed at the meeting: students asked about additional classes in the most difficult subjects for students, the employment of students and graduates, student participation in the scientific life of the University, improving living conditions in the dormitories, and organizing summer vacation, among other things. A lot of questions were devoted to industrial internships — students were interested exactly how the internships are assigned to students.

One of the main questions asked was focused on the possibilities and terms of obtaining more scholarships. As Alevtina Chernikova explained, there are now 50 scholarship programs being implemented at NUST MISIS, including through the University’s partnership with leading Russian companies. Scholarships for students are divided into state academic scholarships, nominal scholarships (for example, the Mayor of Moscow scholarship), specialized ones (for example, BEST MISIS), awards (for example, the award named after V.S. Strizhko), and international ones for students going to study abroad or coming to NUST MISIS from another country. Scholarships can be combined as well.

While addressing the students Chernikova stressed that their initiative is one of the main forces that can improve the University.

Based on student suggestions and announced during the “Open Rectorate”, the University has expanded its WiFi range, opened new self-preparation rooms in dorms, opened a sports complex in the Commune House, and improved the functionality of student`s personal accounts.

In 2014, scientific & educational organizations from 18 countries participated in the ranking. In 2018 however, educational organizations from 50 countries took part. The final list includes 378 universities. NUST MISIS’s results are even more encouraging, rising from 163rd to 99th.

According to the ranking’s representatives, the methodology of the Emerging Economies University Rankings revised was revised for 2018. The aim of the changes was to better reflect the priority areas of development of universities in countries with dynamically developing economies. In particular, the indicators characterizing a university’s connections with the business community and how a university integrates itself into the world scientific & educational environment have gained the highest weight. NUST MISIS scored significant results in both indicators.

“Compared to last year, the number of international students and scientific studies has increased, as well as the income from developments carried out in the interest of the business community. Currently, we work with 1,609 companies in various spheres of our activities. I would also like to note that not only has the quantity, but the quality of scientific research, has also improved. Compared to 2017’s figures, NUST MISIS’s scientists have published three times more articles in journals included in the WoS and Scopus database, and the citation of scientific works performed by NUST MISIS researchers has increased more than 2.5 times”, said Alevtina Chernikova, Rector of NUST MISIS.

When compiling the ranking, THE obtained most of the information from public sources. Part of the data, such as the number of academic staff, the number of students, and funding were provided by the universities. Surveys of representatives from academia and the business community contributed more than a third of the information to the rating index.

That is why the entry of NUST MISIS into the TOP-100 of the ranking is an impressive achievement. The University has managed to achieve results in such indicators as impact of scientific research, income from investments, and international cooperation. In fact, she’s developed a filter for a unique oil “vacuum cleaner”, which can effectively collect oil film from sea and ocean surfaces after accidents and emergency situations in the oil industry without disturbing the water balance. Alyona, as part of the research team, has already received a patent for the innovation.

According to the developed hydrophobization method, a sample on the basis of a high-porous coal clay — a fire-brick, a simple and environmentally-friendly material, was developed at the NUST MISIS Department of Physical Chemistry. This material can be used as an industrial basis for the filter device for water purification from oils and petroleum products.

Alyona Nikiforova began to develop her project in the 10th grade under the guidance of material scientists from NUST MISIS. In spring 2017, she successfully presented her work at NUST MISIS Science Days, and then at the All-Russian Educational Center “Sirius”, where she continued to work with professors from NUST MISIS as part of the summer project “Big challenges” in “New materials”.

In October 2017, Alyona Nikiforova presented her project at the Russian qualifying round of the Intel ISEF, a major international pre-university scientific contest, and she is now among the 4 winners who will represent Russia at the contest for young scientists and developers in the U.S. in May 2018. Every year, more than 2,000 participants from high schools from more than 75 countries demonstrate their research and compete for a prize pool of $4,000,000. Four participants will represent Russia in 2018.

About the development

The problem of the world’s ocean pollution is a forefront issue. That is why methods of obtaining cheap and simple hydrophobic coatings, which help to separate petroleum products and water, are in high demand.

Hydrophobic coatings do not repel water molecules, but interact with them very poorly. Hydrophilic coatings, in turn, interact well with water. Alyona Nikiforova chose felt as a base material, as the basic of the filter’s element. The felt was heat-treated for 40 minutes in a stream of propane and water vapor at a temperature of 7000 Celcius, and heating and cooling were carried out in an inert atmosphere using argon gas. As a result, filaments were produced on the material`s surface and confirmed by electron microscopic studies.

The desired hydrophobicity of the obtained samples was determined by the angle of wetting with water drops that were applied to their surface. The water drops remained on the surface after the felt processing, which proves its hydrophobicity. The sample absorbed oil as well. Thus, the obtained material is hydrophobic and at the same time oleophilic—that is—it repels water and simultaneously absorbs oil. That property is required for the device to collect oil from water surfaces.

NUST MISIS Shines among Project 5-100 Participants in the QS BRICS Ranking

In the QS BRICS-2018 Ranking, NUST MISIS has strengthened and validated its results in almost every indicator, including Employer Reputation, one of the main indicators.

This increase is most evident in the Times Higher Education World University Ranking, in which the University rose by 200 positions to enter the group of 601+.

“In a highly competitive global higher education market, you have to run fast just to stand still, as standards of education and research are improving across the world. So the rise of NUST MISIS, from outside our top 800 last year up into the 601-800 zone, amid growing global competition, is a significant achievement and a cause for real celebration”, said Phil Baty, Editorial Director, Global Rankings, at Times Higher Education.

In the new THE World University Ranking-2018, NUST MISIS has improved its positions across a number of the ranking’s core performance matrices. The University made a significant improvement in its research influence score —the most heavily weighted metric, as measured by citations (from 8.7 last year to this year’s 24.2). Research is another parameter of the ranking where NUST MISIS showed positive improvements — up from 13.9 to 20.1.

According to Alevtina Chernikova, Rector of NUST MISIS, “In the new THE World University Ranking-2018, NUST MISIS has improved its positions on a number of key scientometric indicators: Research and Citation. Also, the University has demonstrated impressive achievements in the Industry income indicator, and has entered the top 25% of the world`s best universities. This has become possible due to the University`s strategy focused widely on interaction with the business community. Only as recently as 2016 did NUST MISIS carry out orders on the development of new materials for such corporate giants as Siemens (Germany), Panasonic (Japan), LG (Republic of Korea), Tata Steel UK Limited (Great Britain), and Energietecknik Essen GmbH (Germany). All scientific-research laboratories and engineering centers here at NUST MISIS work closely with the business community: currently, the University has commitments with more than 500 Russian and world-leading companies.”

Also, NUST MISIS improved on the International outlook metrics — from 40.9 to 56.3.

“NUST MISIS has improved across a number of our core performance metrics, but its most notable improvements have been in its links with industry, which demonstrate the real-world applications of the university’s research, its international outlook, which demonstrate that the university has become more open to global student and academic talent, and most significantly of all, its research influence. There has been a major improvement in NUST MISIS’s research quality, measured through an analysis of citations. Congratulations to NUST MISIS for this strong performance”, Baty noted.
