Patent of the Week: Drilling in Diamonds

The Russian Federal Service for Intellectual Property (Rospatent) recognized the Russian Federation patent 2625832 as patent of the week (April 30th, 2018 to May 6th, 2018). This patent is NUST MISIS`s “Drill bit reinforced with diamond-cutting elements” development (authors: Polushin N.I., Maslov A.L., Laptev A.I., Kushkhabiev A.S., Kotelnikova O.S., Varshavskiy Y.S.).

The authors developed a drill bit reinforced with diamond-cutting elements which contains a frame with blades that form an inter-bladed space with diamond cutting elements mounted on them, and an electromechanical deposition of a protective coating on the working surfaces of the drill bit containing diamond microparticles and nanodiamond particles distributed between the diamond microparticles. The diamond microparticles and nanodiamond particles contained in the protective coating create a smooth and slippery outer layer that dramatically reduces packing in the drilling process, thus providing effective protection of the bit’s surface from abrasive wear.

This innovative technology can be used to drill wells in the extraction of minerals, primarily oil and gas extraction, while also reducing operation costs.
